Our Highland Cattle

Our herd of Scottish Highland Cattle counts app. 10 cows, 3 breeding bulls and 15-20 heifers and young calves. Our goal is a herd of breeding highest possible quality.

We weigh all our calves at birth, 200 days and 365 days to keep track of whether they have a good growth. Additionally, all our cows and young bulls are judged at a linear scale by a judge who gives them scoring in relation to how close they are adjacent to breeding goals. Both parts to select the best animals for future breeding. Our calves get scanned their back muscle about 1 years old, to see how much "fillet" is on the animals. Only the best will be used for breeding, while the rest ends up in the freezer.

To get new and better genes to breeding, we have purchased the embryos in the U.S.. So far that have given us 3 good breeding bulls, and one of them is currently our stock bull. In addition, we inseminate a few animals each year, with semen from imported bulls.

We attach great importance to our animals are confident and calm. We spend a lot of time grooming and talking to the animals so that they become familiar with us. All our cows love to be groomed and most are easy to put a halter on and draw with. We once had a cow, which did not have the best temperament and she was the first to go to the butcher. We will only have animals that are completely quiet and our favourites are those where we can touch their newborn calves, without the least against it.

Additionally, the animals of course must have the breed characteristic and charming appearance and last but not least they must be robust animals that provide a calf every year.
